One of my favourite questions, and I mention this in the book, came when I hit a roadblock when working for a client, a leading Asian hospital looking to affordably improve paediatric patient experience.

I’d learned from doctors and stakeholders that the hospital was already doing far more than I could have imagined for their patients and patient families.

I was completely out of ideas.

After some minutes of feeling helpless, more calmly, I reworded the challenge to. Now it sounded something like: ‘What more could we affordably do to improve this phase of the patients (and their families’) lives?’

That shift almost instantly unlocked a renewed phase of interviewing families and stakeholders to simply learn more about how their lives have changed.

It led to a solution I myself was amazed by, and that was well-received by members of the hospital’s Board.

The approach also revealed an invisible but worthy challenge: improving staff well-being. And a solution for it.

: What is the one best question you’ve asked, yourself, your team, anyone: that made a positive, transformative difference?
