The world has massive problems with “cool” solutions that create even bigger disasters.

From the 1950s, we solved convenience with plastic, and now we’re literally breathing it.
We solved the fossil fuel headache with Electric Vehicles, only to hand the next generation nightmare fields the toxic battery disposal.
This is what happens when you have the “meat” of innovation without the “bread” of reality.

My Solution: The Innovation Thinking Sandwich.

1. The Top Slice: System Thinking

Before you sketch a single UI or prototype a part, stop. Ask: Does this problem actually need to be solved, or should it be allowed to fade into oblivion?
Use a systems lens to map the ripple effects. If a possible solution path could create a circular mess ten years later, don’t start!
These aren’t just thoughts; make them design constraints.

2. The Meat (or Veggies): Design Thinking

Once you have the “can” and “can’t do’s” established, use humility, empathy and intent, and the design thinking mindset and tools to conceptualize solution paths.
This is where you solve the challenge within the boundaries the system set for you.

3. The Bottom Slice: System Thinking (Again)

You think you have a winner with your design thinking journey? Run it through the gauntlet one more time.
Does it hold up against the future? Is it safe for the world five decades from now, or is it just a short-term solution or dopamine hit for the market?

If the System Thinking doesn’t hold the Design Thinking together, you aren’t innovating. You’re just making a mess.

C'mon, let's have your views on it.
